The initial phase of the summer school was dedicated to exploring the wider context of the country and the selected case study area, so the students could understand better the given assignment. Three educational trips were organized where experts in their field of research held lectures regarding:
History of the city of Skopje from Ancient times till the period of the Modern – A lecture held by Assist. Prof. Velika Ivkovska. The students had a chance to visit Skupi (a Roman military camp founded in the 2nd century BC); The Canyon Matka (the oldest artificial lake in the country and home to several medieval monasteries and churches); The Old Bazaar (dating from the 12th century, mainly developed during Ottoman rule of Skopje); The Stone bridge (one of the most highlighted landmarks of the city), The Old Railway station that was heavily damaged during the earthquake in 1963; The Main square of Skopje and the surrounding buildings; The Sobranie Palace (The seat of the Assembly of North Macedonia, constructed in 1938 during the existence of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia), The GTC and Museum of the Contemporary Art from the period of the Modern…and other important buildings in the city.
The city of Ohrid – A lecture held by Assist. Prof. Velika Ivkovska. The students had a chance to visit the beautiful town of Ohrid – home of 365 churches, which from 1979 is declared as UNESCO Natural and Cultural Heritage Site. The students had a chance to visit several churches, the Monastery complex of Plaoshnik, the ancient theatre, the Samoil’s Fortress, etc… In this lecture, the typical building techniques of the churches as well as their adaptations and restoration stages were closely explained and presented.
The vernacular architecture and the organic matrix of the city of Ohrid – lecture held by Assoc. Prof. Radmila Tomovska. The students had a chance to go through the old town organic urban matrix, and visit some of the most famous houses of traditional vernacular architecture, woodcarving and jewellery workshops, and shops. In this lecture, the building techniques of the houses were closely explained and presented. The adaptations of the houses and reusability of the material were considered as thoughtful and sustainable approaches by the master builders of vernacular architecture.
The Cultural Heritage: Skopje’s Aqueduct – A lecture held by d.i.a Mirka Iloska (Conservation Advisor – Head Conservator of the Aqueduct’s Immediate Protection) regarding the origin, conservation and protection of Skopje’s Aqueduct. The students were introduced very closely to the theories related to the origin of the monument – the dating, its construction as well as the phases of its rehabilitation, reconstruction, and phases of protection. During this educational trip, students started to conduct analysis and define the existing problems on the location site.
